7/10 unemployed people in Malaga find a new job within less than a year

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

The latest report produced by the Andalusian Employment Service (SAE) shows that seven out of ten unemployed people in the province of Malaga find work within a year of losing their previous job.

The results of the report show that it is easier to find work in large coastal municipalities, such as Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Estepona. In these areas, the percentage of unemployed people who find a job within three months is more than 45 per cent, and three per cent higher in Estepona. Similarly, those who live in inland areas with few inhabitants also have a better chance of finding work within three months of becoming unemployed. Some examples are Cútar (80 per cent) and Salares (70 per cent).

DYNAMISM
On the whole, the figures for the province are positive and show the dynamism of the job market. More than half of the inhabitants of every one in five towns leave the dole queue in just 90 days, and some don’t even have to wait that long: according to the SAE, four out of ten unemployed people find work in less than three months.

On the other side of the coin is the group of so-called long-term unemployed which refers to people who have been out of work for more than a year. In the city of Malaga, there were 15,087 long-term unemployed in February (35 per cent of the total); 60 per cent of these people previously worked in the service sector, whilst 17 per cent had never had a job before. The unemployment rate in the province went up 0.51 per cent last month bringing Malaga’s long-term unemployed to 29,984, 70 per cent of whom were women.
